The Interesting History of Montecristo Cigars

There's something about a fine cigar, especially when its origins lie in the warm, sultry Caribbean. The best of them deliver taste, sophistication and a lifetime of pleasurable memories, all in just a single experience. Plus, a great cigar makes you want to come back for more. Montecristo Cigars, considered among the finest in the world, are a prime example of the cigar as a work of art, even. And just how Montecristos are found in the humidors of many of the world's most famous people also provides an interesting history itself.

The Cigar's Name

The Montecristo was given life in 1935 when Alonso Menendez purchased the Particulares cigar factory in Cuba. Cigar rollers on the floor, toiling away for long hours hand-crafting their products, often listened to novels and other stories read to them by their lectors, or foremen.

Menendez noticed that the Alexandre Dumas novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, was a particular favorite of these men. He also liked how the words "Monte Cristo" rolled off the tongue and set out to create a premium cigar that used them as its brand name.

How it Became Popular

Menendez and his team caught lighting in a bottle, because Montecristos delivered a unique flavor that quickly caught on. Owing to the success of his new cigar as well as others in his collection, Menendez soon purchased a larger factory to increase production.

Once firmly established in Cuba the cigar attracted corporate suitors, including the Alfred Dunhill company. The British firm's worldwide distribution network rapidly made the Montecristo the cigar of choice among aficionados everywhere.

After the Cuban Revolution in 1961 the government nationalized the island's cigar factories and Menendez had to relocate operations. He first reestablished production in the Canary Islands and then, finally, in the Dominican Republic.

Today, Montecristos come in several premium blends to satisfy the discerning tastes of cigar lovers everywhere. If you want to learn more about which Montecristo is just right for you, then contact us today.
